Lavender

Hi all. 
My Lavender is getting very tall and stringy, I was wondering when is the best time and the best way to prune 
your help please Terry

    It’s better if you can prune it into shape when young and do it annually right after flowering, when the stems are still green. If the stems have gotten all woody and bare, if you prune it back into the brown wood, it will not regenerate well. So it depends how bad it is really and whether you would be better buying new plants next year...

    I’m not the best person to reply really as I struggle to grow it in my soil, only the Lavender x Intermedia type does well here, so hopefully someone else can confirm or deny my advice!

    You can prune it back now (only into green growth though) or do it in the Spring. I tend to harvest most of my long stems at the end of Summer and give a good tidy again after Winter. My plants are large and were leggy when I inherited them, so I need to take most of it back before the Winter rain and snow or the stems will be heavy and break. Some say you can cut into old wood but I wouldn’t recommend. I’m sure internet and others may give advice too.

    All valid advice here. Ive been using the advice posted on the link below for the last 3 years and the advice has been spot on for our conditions. If it’s too leggy and hasn’t been pruned for a couple of years, getting some new plants may be an easier solution and they bulk out quickly the following year..https://youtu.be/sij011y3DCs
