How do you train a rose like Gertrude Jekyll?

  • Hi @Nollie here are three shots of my La Rose de Molinard I only planted this year. Excuse the wayward verbena in the background, haven't done the autumn tidy up and mulch as yet. Hopefully it gives you a realistic idea what it grows like...haven't done anything to it than feeding and deadheading.

That looks incredibly healthy for this time of year, thanks, @amancalledgeorge, you are tipping the balance very much in it’s favour. Glossy foliage does well here too, seems to withstand the extremes of heat better. I best add an obelisk to my wish list!

It does look healthy.  I shall keep an eye out for glossy foliage for future rose acquisitions.

That's a good thought @Obelixx, I'll try to remember that as well.

Also glossy leaves shrug off heavy downpours and dry faster, are often (but not always, and I cite Wild Rover here) slower to get blackspot and seem less attractive to munching insects. Some can look quite coarse and leathery though, so there is always a quid pro quo. I think George’s rose has really handsome foliage though, so a RdeM will definitely be joining Gertrude.
