What’s wrong with my lilacs?

They’re 2 year old cuttings, haven’t flowered yet. The leaves are going brown and it doesn’t look like normal die-back to me. Worst on the two tallest cuttings, the two smaller ones look much less affected. Stems and buds look okay. Any ideas?

Could it be an infestation of leaf miners?  Larvae of some moths get between the layers of a leaf and cause die back.  Many different plants can be affected.
If you check the leaf carefully, there may be a little larva that has caused the damage.  There are some ways of dealing with leaf miners, I believe, so if I am right, a bit of research may help you.
If it were me, I would pick off each affected leaf (and not put it on a compost heap) and be vigilant when new growth is in evidence next spring.
That's just a thought - others may have a better diagnosis.

I agree with Shrinking Violet there. They do look like Leaf miner damage. The best thing to do is to try and remove fallen leaves around the base or rake away the leaves to minimise re-infection for next year.
  • thanks so much, I will look into that! :)
