I was given some last autumn. I have never tried them before. One was a huge plant with a tea plate flower. I am not sure that dahlias are the plants I would have ever thought of growing. I can't see myself in a frock with a trug of Dahlias all ready for flower arranging.
Make sure the stem not hollow otherwise it will not root. They will have to be grown on in the house over winter. The cutting you are referring to from the tuber is called a basel cutting I believe.
I’m pretty sure every stem on dahlias is hollow - when I’m deadheading or cutting back to base for lifting. What am I missing?
Its a feast for the eyes @oooft So which is your favourite then ? or preformed the best then this year.
Hi Perki. They're all my favourites! The orange pompom one called Sylvia flowered first and has not stopped. Its very generous. Its wee pink pal Sandra was slower to flower but just as generous. A dark red pompom called Downham royal has been most commented by visitors. A new dinner plate one called otto's thrill has been delightful at times but gets a big soggy in the rain. I think it's easier to say there's one absolute stinker. Might be called cafe something. Kind of skittery brown and cream coloured, would look best on a coffin. It's the first on the left in my first pic and actually looks not too bad in that pic, buts trust me, she's a minger. I grew an anemone flowered type this year which has been popular with all the wildlife. I even see moths feeding on it at night. The flowers only last a day it two but there have been plenty. I'll shut up now mad dahlia geek

I've grown Sylvia for the first time this year and its done very well unfortunately the wind split it open but it still happily flowers away. I am growing cafe au lait ( the one you are referring to ? ) for the first time as well , its in the GH with some buds on I'll see for myself soon. I've got a few flowering away David howard / rebecca world but Thomas Edison ever so reliable just flowers like crazy . I am starting to get a bit of a collection now about 17 variety's
Thanks for your kind words, Deb. You are so lucky with your weather down there. And you're right. Dahlias are the best! The cuttings take time, effort and patience but for a little care you'll be very well rewarded. I only wish they were scented. Have you tried growing any of the single types? I find bees love to sleep in them. Early morning and late evening reveals the most colourful bee dormitory. Heaven!
I do grow some singles @oooft and they are a magnet for bees! One of my favourite colours in the garden is orange so looking at various websites, I am deciding whether to treat myself to 'Happy Single Date', 'Ossie Latham' or 'Carol Klein'.....have you grown any of these or maybe you have another orange recommendation?

Yes! I grow Thomas Edison, he is an absolute beast! Enormous with tons of huge vivid flowers. I have an arrangement with Jowey veronique and Karma Lagoon growing together with the Edison, looks magic. I looked through the invoice for the ones i bought for this year and think the minging one may be called frost nip and either the soil has altered the colour or i got a mis labelled one. I wouldnt knowingly buy a brown flower! I just dont think you can have too many varieties of dahlia. 17 seems a good number to have. For now!

I dont know any of these i'm afraid. I grow Sylvia, Happy Halloween, Ariko Zsa Zsa which are all orange, David howard yellowy orange and Karma Fiesta which is orange with a yellow splash. Fiesta has been absolutely magic for bringing things together in the borders. The crocosmia, some geums, some echinacea all blended really well with that dahlia in amongst them. I noticed that the orange flowered ones flowered earlier in my garden than the others so i think orange dahlias will be a really good shout for you no matter which type you choose.
@oooft - oooh, now I'm feeling like a child in a sweet shop. Many thanks for sharing your extensive knowledge - you will definitely be my go-to person if I need to know anything Dahlia related!

'You must have some bread with it me duck!'
I think it's more convenient to wait until spring. Why tend them all winter when they strike so easily and rapidly form large plants in spring?
