Overwintering tomato plants

Hi, is it possible to overwinter tomato plant cuttings? I grew some lovely tomatoes from seed which were a hybrid variety, I’d love to have some next year but the seed was very expensive (£3 for 4 seeds!) and I can’t remember the name of the variety. Any help is much appreciated.

I'd not bother. Save some of the seed and sow them next year, you may be pleasantly surprised how similar they are.
I grew Sweet Million last year and some of the fallen seed germinated in the bed this year and the fruit is just as tasty, not massive trusses, but as they were effectively free plants, I'm more than happy with them

Thanks Hostafan, I guess I’ve nothing to lose by trying to keep a few cuttings going in the greenhouse and plant some of the seed from the toms I’ve already grown. Btw, I think the variety is called Midnight Snack, a delicious tart (don’t like sweet flavour) red and black tomato......loads of them too.

unless the greenhouse is heated, plants won't survive the winter, and , even at £3 a pack of seeds, it's not worth heating it to keep them going.
You paid 75 p per seed, not cheap , but were the fruit that seed produced worth it? If so buy more next year, but I'd save some seed and grow them too.
I plant to save some "Sungold" seeds and try them next year.

You can overwinter them inside but it's not worth it and they need better light levels than you can give them even on a south-facing windowsill. If you have a reasonably warm conservatory, it could be a way.

Try it and let us know how you get on, I'm sure I saw someone with an ancient tomato plant they kept on their kitchen windowsill on TV or something recently

Can i hop on the thread with my tumbling tom plant?

Grown from a delivered plug plant, I don’t have a greenhouse or cold frame. Anything I can do to have it survive the winter, or just order more in the spring?

A conservatory might work, but the easiest way is to grow from seed in spring

Very inexpensive, and germination is usually good.

Thanks for all the advice, I think I’ll give it a go. If it all goes to pot (pun intended) I’ll just buy some more seed next year and maybe use the offsets to start new plants so I can have more than 4 plants. I have an unheated greenhouse, no conservatory and my terraced house has low light levels so the chances are slight but heyho it’s a challenge, especially as the tops of my plants have new growth on them which I can pot up.

I buy seeds from this company, they last for years so you can take out what you need and keep the rest somewhere cool. They will survive on your kitchen window sill till you can find a hanging basket or tub to put them in.
