Sieving soil in flower beds

  • I reckon sieving will sadly remove some of the much needed worms but if you're going down this line then I would keep some of the pebbles. Get yourself a compost heap and start creating your own compost which you can use in time to improve the organic matter and structure of your soil. But in the absence of this you might be able to get some free compost down your local tip which is as good as anything you can buy these days. Don't compact it but firm in any plants you choose to add. Finally I'd recommend that you set the level of the beds an inch below the paving which will keep the paths tidier and improve drainage.
  • I have sieved the soil in one bed now with a far bigger mesh that leaves the smaller pebbles and removes the larger stones.
    I was thinking of adding the stones back into the bottom of the bed at a depth of about 2-3 feet from the level of the patio. would this help with drainage? 
    Is this a good idea?
