Bramley apple drop

Good morning, my Bramley has dropped quite a few apples already, late September, and I believe they aren't supposed to be ready till November. Are the apples useable and can I compost the damaged ones, they're bruised and have pest damage, thanks.

  • Thanks pansyface, I knew I would get a good reply here.
  • I usually use early windfall Bramleys for chutney along with the green tomatoes and the glut of courgette/marrows.

Any that are too bruised will be good for the blackbirds and the redwings and fieldfares ... or yes, they can go in the compost heap.

  • Thank you Dove, unfortunately only the big birds dare to enter our garden, two young cats on alert are their problem!
  • Ah well, better that they don’t then ... cooking or composting then ... apples that is, not the cats 😉

  • Thank you all for advice and brightening my dismal, wet, very wet, day.
  • Our Bramleys have been falling in the windy weather lately - too many to for us to use so we either compost them, leave some on the ground for the birds or give them to a local pig farmer - he has been collecting  full tubs of apples from us during the past week - we only have 4 trees.
