Sweetcorn

Why hasn't the cobs on my sweetcorn developed properly they have plenty of corn on the bottom half but none at the top half, could it be a poll'nation issue.or the wet and cool weather we we have had at the wrong time,I would like your views, and if anybody else have had the same problem Regards Peter

I have had the same problem for last 2 years. Though this does not deter the taste. I thought it was because I grow too close together.though last year we got the rain ,too much at the wrong time. So I suppose it could all be down to the weather.

I suspect it may be more to do with having a heatwave when the female parts are being pollinated earlier in summer.   It happened to us 2 years in a row here - too hot and dry - so I didn't bother planting any this year and it's just as well.  July was record heat and drought here.

  • Maybe poor pollination do you plant them in rows or in blocks

Blocks.  It's an irrigation problem here.  Drought and water restrictions.

I’m in East Anglia in free draining loam ... I find we have to water our sweet corn generously as the cobs are swelling.

The first lot I planted out at the beginning of June are like that. Generally poor pollination. The second batch planted out at the end of June have much better cobs. I suspect it is weather related. In dry years they do need a lot of water. This year I haven't watered at all except for watering in on planting.
