  • This also stumped me for a while but because it germinated in your GH, I had a think about plants which are tender in this country which may have come from birdseed.  I'm pretty sure it is Guizotia abyssinica (Niger seed plant.):
and will have yellow flowers if it survives the cold.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Try selling that on the streets of Birmingham you'd get shot 😂😂🔫

WHY? For trying to pass it off as hemp or for crossing county lines?
  • Thanks @BobTheGardener also a possibility. I did purposely try to grow Nyger birdseed a few years ago and all I got was a pot full of short (less than 6") leaves with no flowers. This curiosity is at least 5ft tall and noticeably growing by the day.

I do have a bird feeder close by so maybe that's the source. I appreciate your suggestion and will try to keep it alive to flower.

Quite intriguing @sampullman. @BobTheGardener's suggestion looks very likely.

Perhaps the conditons were just spot on for it this time in your greenhouse.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

  • Thanks again everyone for your expertise. Consensus currently seems to be lying on the niger/nyger seed camp. I will certainly keep this post updated if there is any significant development with flowers etc.

So nice that people take the time to pass on their knowledge and help out with great advice. Thanks  <3
