This could be a cordyline australis. I do not know if your plant's syptoms match this https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=552

Hi thanks.  I cannot see any slime and neither am I experiencing any smells which is what they are saying slime flux normally presents it self as.

  • This looks like a Cordyline to me too, they grow freely where I live, personally I am not keen on them but everyone has different tastes.  The flowers are yellow with a strong fragrance.

These trees die off if the weather freezes, but after a short time (perhaps next Spring) you should see new shoots coming from the base of the tree.  Unless the parent tree is in danger of falling and causing damage then I would leave it just as it is for now.  If there are no shoots by this time next year then remove the tree and plant another if you wish to.

It's growing in a lawn... have you applied any chemicals or herbicides?

  • Thanks Guernsey Donkey
  • WillDB yes the grass was treated with chemicals last winter, Could that be the reason then ?

I'd say it's 100% dead and you might as well remove it.
