Lawnmower

I'm looking to replace my mother's petrol lawnmower which is on it's last legs. She has asked me to look into a new petrol hand pushed mower, which can do slopes, and with an adjustable cut height of up to 15cm (6 inches). This is because she wants to leave the grass long for wildflowers and primroses. She already has a strimmer, but this method doesn't collect the grass cuttings, which is also important to her. I've looked at the John Deere jx90 cb, but this only cuts up to 10cm (4inches)
Any suggestions?

  • The JX90 is a massively heavy mower that I'd not wish on anyone's mother.

You won't get a mower that cuts to 6".

If she wants the wildflowers, she needs to cut the grass short now, remove all the clippings, then let it grow without being cut through summer.

Look for a night 4 wheeled mower that's self propelled and adjusts to a very slow speed. Push mowers and bankings are terribly hard work.

Also consider the angle of the banks first and most importantly for the user safety and secondly for the engine lubrication not moving away from vital parts

If THAT was my mother I’d want
her to do all my gardening! Not all mothers are weak and not all old women are decrepit.

You're just being a bit silly now!
  • I refused @Hexagon ... or rather I tried to ... but a long-standing
medical condition has, over the years, had such an effect on my ligaments and joints that I am no longer able to do some of the things I used to do, no matter how much I want to do them ... in some instances I’ve permanently damaged myself by trying to carry on as before.

Some of us don’t have the luxury of refusing to become one of ‘those people’ and I hope other folk don’t think of me in such disparaging terms. ☹️

It’s sad that most old people might struggle getting out of a chair let alone push a “heavy” lawnmower up a hill. I refuse to become one of those people.

You're looking for something that isn't there. It's desperate.

Anything over 4 inches could be dangerous for toes, plus pushing a mower through grass that long would be really hard going.

How big is the garden that you need to cut grass?

If you're considering a lawnmower that can cope with slopes, we would recommend that you look to get one with a low centre of gravity.

We design our mowers for commercial use, with a strict low centre of gravity. But in the case of a small garden, you might want to use a domestic version
