    Hmm.

I did a little more research, and this might throw the cat amongst the pigeons:

(Reading) council is forecast to make more than £440,000 in extra money from garden waste collection charges in the next year, figures show.

So we can supply, pay for its collections then they can sell it to the compost makers who put it in little plastic bags and we can pay again.

@Hexagon:  Thanks for the link.  I have already made my concerns known to the council.  Another source tells me the annual charge is £49.
  • What’s the problem with the council making money?  ... it doesn’t go into the councillors’ pockets 🤣  ... it goes to offset costs and keep out council tax down 👍

49 quid a year doesn't sound a lot to me. When you think how readily people buy coffees, or newspapers/magazines etc every week.

I'm not sure our council sells compost back to us. Never really thought about it.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

If the council is going to charge us for collecting green waste, I think the correct approach is for them to be covering the running costs of collecting green waste...not charging double and using extra paid by gardeners on who knows what else.
  • On its legal responsibilities I would hope ... education, social care, support for those with learning and other disabilities, libraries, policing ... and the collection and disposal of waste, amongst many other things .... the councillors we elect help to decide the priorities.

@Fairygirl:£49 is about £1 per week, which seems pretty reasonable to me.  However, it would make sense if, when accessing the council's website, the information was easily retrievable.  I couldn't find the figure, so why they try to keep it a secret is a mystery.
  • If your council website isn’t clear tell your local councillors

The Norwich site is very good https://www.norwich.gov.uk/info/20185/garden_waste_service/1260/how_the_garden_waste_service_works

It depends what they spend the money on. The money for services cut by the government has to come from somewhere.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
