Private edible hedge ideas please

I had planted 50 willow cuttings last year to try to make a living hedge about 10 made it. I am overlooked by neighbours as fencing is 4ft high. I rent but am allowed to plant so now there is bamboo at the top .  However I really Shrubs and growth which is dense to screen the windier sides and I've been looking at filberts and thornless fruit canes ...I'm looking for something quick growing any ideas please? Many thanks....

  • Sorry should read I'd live to plant shrubs or anything to provide dense growth to sides. The soil in front is used also for rotational crops .

Hazel and cherry plum are two possibilities but neither is fast growing until they really get established. After that they can put on a lot of growth in one season.

elaeagnus umbellata - the autumn olive - makes a good hedge on a windy site if it's not too cold

If looking for a quick screen, in rented accom., I'd look into high wattle panels / arbour options.

Depending how shelterd/southern you are, how about grapes? they grow fast and can be trained as high/wide/thin as you like.
  • It's south facing but very exposed and so the winds gust through. Some great ideas here Thankyou!
