I think it was Lee Evans observation “Why do they make toasters with settings that burn the bread?”  had me in fits of laughter, his delivery was always great.

My toaster burns bread on “4”.  It goes up to “10”.  Unsurprisingly I’ve never tried “10”, I’m assuming it’s like some sort of nuclear furnace.

In my extensive experience, the dial on the side is basically pointless and all toasters have just two settings; hot bread or charcoal. if you want nice brown toast, you have to keep putting it in on 'hot bread' and stand ready to do an emergency release when you get a whiff of burning crumbs

Can I just remind everyone that you can also toast bread under the grill!  Best of all though is "fire toast", made on a toasting fork over an open fire.  Not for the greedy or large families, as you can only do one slice at a time, and only one side at a time.
