Rockery - to mulch or not to mulch?

No  - not really. You would just have lain the stones flat side up, and running down slightly towards the back. That helps direct water down and away from the plants to prevent waterlogging.
Mind you - it won't really matter - most heathers actually cope with quite a lot of water  ;)
You might find they get a bit dense though - they do spread a fair bit.  :)
Ah right ok! Might take it out and start again... Then again I'm starting to go into hibernation for winter now and have so much more to do😂

What might spread the campanula or heathers?

The heathers. The campanula will spread too, but it's easy to pull bits off that. Heathers get quite sizeable within a few years if they're happy.

I wouldnt worry too much about them just now. It'll be easy enough to remove them if they get a bit thuggish.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thats great I wanted the heathers to spread out anyway, was worried they'd just stay ad little straggly things. I've worked loads of grit in so hopefully they'll be happy! So heather can thug away!
