  • Nollie, Just seen where you are hope you family are all safe after the floods or wasn't that your area hope it wasn't.

I like your Idea with the bamboo blinds, will keep my eyes open in the sales for some as that would give more protection and the squirrels although would still be able to run up and down it they wouldn't get court in it and rip it to bits.

Thanks Nannaboo, no, fortunately not our area. We do get some terrific rainstorms though coming over from the Pyrenees!

The bamboo stuff I use is really cheap stuff, with very narrow lengths sewn together loosely, it lets in a fair amount of light but seems to do the trick in shading the poly. If the squirrels do wreck it, it’s not a big loss.

Given how essential shading is, you would think greenhouse suppliers would build it in, or use a diffuse glass or something.  Perhaps of the really expensive brands do do that...

  • Nollie, just put up a wanted add on Freegle and Freecycle you never know someone might have a one or two them no longer want and if not I'll buy enough to cover the GH.

Son asked that question re built in shading when he was buy the GH. Our trouble is we have no shade at all the only tree is over the back to us and take doesn't give us any shade.

The forecast storms for us on Sunday I think they said not that we get really bad one's here.
  • hi nannaboo,
your greenhouse sounds more like a sauna in summer. Hopefully the shading on the outside will help. However with the degree on heat you seem to get I would consider getting a good grape vine to climb up the sun side of the greenhouse also. It would absorb most of the heat and still let in at least half the light (or more with pruning if needed).
Just a thought, I know grape vines can become a bit invasive but are easily pruned. Would climb along the netting nicely. It would take years to cover a greenhouse so a couple of apple tree's planted in some big wilko pots would provide some added shade next year. I know at the right time of year you can pick up apple trees from B'n'Q really reduced. I think it's end of spring when anything hasn't sold before summer the trees get put on offer which is the right time you would need any old one to just provide a bit of shade.

  • mrtjforman, We don't have any ground to put a grape vine in as I wanted to have slabs inside and outside the GH. We have put down 4 ft of slabs x 14 ft outside so I could get a couple of apple tree's and put them in really big tubs as us suggest which would give us a twofold benefit apples and shade. We have an apple tree which has given up I think and as we want to grow as much as we can a couple of apple tree would be good along with the Bamboo blinds it would be good. Your right about it being like a sauna I had to come out and get the fan from indoors or my cutting would die. Thanks mrtforman.
