What autumn/winter veg do you find tricky and a breeze to grow?

Some things I would love to grow are most uncooperative:

Celariac - managed a golf-ball sized one once
Purpe sprouting broccoli - who knew red shield bugs love it so much
Savoy cabbage - never hearts me

Autumn rompers:

Spicy oriental salad mix
Lettuce mix
Radishes
Kale
Swiss Chard
Spinach
Leeks

Which are the rebels and rompers in your patch?

Garlic planted before Xmas does well here.  Leeks did well the year I found a bundle of babies to plant out but they're hard to find.   Cabbages do well as long as we net them but celeriac requires too much rain.

Salads grow too slowly and end up a bit too tough and bitter for me at any time of year so I'm planning a raised bed up near the kitchen where I can throw water on them more frequently tho the one inherited clematis might protest if it doesn't get all the veg washing water.  I might try some rocket n the polytunnel this year.

Have failed miserably with autumn plantings of onions.  Very poor results.

Planning to try oriental leaves this autumn after this heatwave ends.

I grow leeks from seed in a seed bed and transplant them out in July, works well. Never tried autumn onions, our earlier crop keeps us going throughout winter.

All the salad stuff, kale, chard, etc., I pick as young leaves, they seem do as well in Autumn as in Spring. Anything that needs a long growing season struggles, though. Savoy cabbage is a speciality here, wish I knew the secret, but so far it’s proved easier to just buy them!

  • Love chard and plant onion sets in October.  Not sure if my carrots, black radish and beetroot will get big enough. Mustard greens were too small in autumn then bolted in spring but show promise this time.

Pak choi, rocket and winter salads like lambs lettuce do well.

I am also trying autumn beetroot this year @bookmonster, but have sown close together to pick the young leaves for salads and leave some to see how they go. If they get to golf ball size they are great roasted whole.

  • Mine were down in summer, they will be big enough to roast whole I think.
