Apple trees

we planted 12 apple trees about 4/5 years ago in a small bit of land behind our house, being novices we pretty much left them to it but this year we have noticed something is damaging the trunks on the trees. Anyone know what this could be (it’s not animals as the trees are fenced) what should we be spraying the trees with to stop the pests?
