Cutting newly seeded lawn first time

I seeded my lawn 3 weeks ago and have read to do first cut about 8 weeks and roughly 3 inches tall. 3 weeks in and it is about 4 inches tall in most places but still slightly patchy. Should I still wait or give it a trim?

I think I would wait. The roots need to be firmly anchored before you cut it, or the mower will pull them out. You could try gently pulling a handful to test how firmly rooted it is.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Agree fully with Jenny. If it doesn't pull out easily I'd consider a trim at the highest setting if it's a lightweight mower
