Latest time for planting

How late would you push planting anything in the ground during Autumn? Plants that is, not bulbs.

My instincts are saying around mid-October but I'm all ears.

Also, for re-potting anything that'll be outside over winter, is there a time you really don't want to do it past?

    Depends where you are in the country, but here in Gloucestershire l would say mid to end October. Repotting l would try to get done by the end of September so they can get settled before the really cold and frosty weather sets in.

    As long as the ground isn't frozen, or sodden, you can plant container grown plants, or bare root plants any time. Back end of the year is the traditional time for planting roses, shrubs and trees. In fact tree planting is best done in Winter when they are fully dormant.
    I wouldn't plant anything evergreen too late into Winter.
    Re-potting is best done before the temperatures start to drop too much to allow the plant roots to acclimatise.
