Carrot storage, moist or dry sand?

We're planning to store our over-abundant crop of carrots into the winter, but I'm reading conflicting advice on the internet as to whether the sand should be moist or dry?  Does anybody have any experience of storing carrots and which is best?

Moist, the first year my sand was too dry and they all shriveled up! After that I've kept carrots parsnips and beetroot all together in a huge bucket of damp sand, they last through until March for me.

I used to grow carrots but I always washed and blanched mine and put them in the freezer, they were then ready for using throughout the winter.
  • Our crop was so abundant that the freezer is full of them, and now I'm reverting to sand storage.  I agree though, they are undistinguishable from fresh carrots when frozen, probably one of the most successfully blanched/frozen veg I've experienced.
