Dianthus

evening everyone,
after some really hot temperatures this summer my dianthus have really suffered (see photos). Do you think they can be saved? I have taken a few cuttings but the main plants have gone crispy in the middle.....
these were some plants I saved from a horrible supermarket death last year and they have been beautiful until they did not get enough water when I was on vacation.

Marne la vallée, basically just outside Paris 🇫🇷, but definitely Scottish at heart.

You can also cover them with a bit of compost and then do that.
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hopefully your cuttings will take, but the 2nd one doesn't look too clever.
I'd be inclined to water them really thoroughly, then try the second method of covering the bottom of the plant with a wee layer of compost, pegging down stems as best you can. I've done that a few times with gappy ones, and it's worked well.
Can you take them out of the pots they're in and put them in separate pots? It might be easier to revive them.
