Rocks for rock garden

Hi all. I want to make a little rockery in the shaded corner of my garden. I've already got a couple of big sandstones to break up but not near enough for what I want. The only places I can think of to go rock hunting are the beach and local park but I don't know if taking rocks would be theft. Does anybody know about this, or some where legal I can go rock hunting (and don't say the garden centre haha)

Thanks all

You cannot take rocks off of a beach. It is definitely theft removing anything from the local park.  If you have big rocks, I would use them as a feature and not break them up. Try gumtree for anyone trying to get rid of rocks if you don't want to pay at the garden centre.
  • Thanks Fidgetbones. That's I thought. Suppose if everyone took a rock they'd be gone. Gumtree is a great idea I don't know why I didn't think of that, Facebook too. I'd have gladly let someone take the sandstones they'd been sitting there five years until now I've now decided to use them. Hopefully someone will have some taking up space they don't want :)

A few big rocks look far better than several small ones ... that can
end up looking like the currants in a Spotted Dick.

Taking rocks from any beach is strictly illegal (as well as being environmental vandalism) and the fines can run to thousands of pounds. It’s also illegal to take rocks from any land that does not belong to you ... even if it looks ‘wild’  so best not to do that 😉.... my daughter got some fantastic rocks for her garden from Freecycle. 😊

Definitely Gumtree and have a walk around your neighbourhood. I nabbed some local Bulwell stone from the skip of a friendly neighbour who was redoing his front drive. Ask first obviously!

You might want to have a go at making some yourself out of cement, sharp sand, grit and soil/compost. Could be acceptable for half buried stones. Make it a pretty stiff mix and try and match the colour to your real rocks. Pat it into the rough shape you want and carve into it when it's just starting to harden. Then try and encourage algae and moss to grow on it to blend it in.
