root pruning

We have a couple of overcrowded troughs with Star Jasmine, pelagoniums (ivy zonal leaves) and bulbs crammed into them. The Star Jasmine which is supposed to be the main plant in the troughs has all but died and is hanging on (just).  I wonder if I can empty the troughs, prune the Jasmine shoots or roots, give the troughs new compost and water well and give the Jasmine a new lease of life - what do others think, and if positive when should I do it?

    I'm interested too... Also, I'm sure I encountered a technique called 'light pruning' with transparent containers. Does any one have a link for that? Thanks
