Turf next to patio

Hi,
When laying turf alongside a patio, should the turf be flush with the patio?

We have a new build, which when we bought had slabs forming a small patio and path. The soil was flush to the top of the slabs. When the turf was laid, they compacted it with a roller etc, but the gsoil was still level with the top of the slab. So when they have laid grass on top its proud.

I think it looks daft - its hard to edge and keeps getting kicked/tripped over so is getting scruffy.

I'd love a "best practice guide" or something that recommends hiw it should be done, so I can throw it back at the builder.

My understanding was that it should be level, but a neighbour that OH helped a few years back insisted that it should be slightly higher so that the mower would go over the top of the patio edge (if that makes sense). Maybe @glasgowdan can confirm.

It doesn't really matter that much but it better when its flush level with the patio.

If your patio is adjacent to the house it should have a 'run' on it away from the house to shed rainwater. Therefore you want the ground to be (marginally) lower than the patio to allow the water to discharge.

As Dave says, drainage is usually onto the lawn so the lawn should be below the patio.  Plus you'll have muddy water running onto the patio from the edge of the lawn.

Mowing strips are different and should be level to slightly below the turf.
