Are apple scab and potato scab the same thing?

Hi Folks - a friend is harvesting his potatoes and they have scab.
He wants to plant an apple tree where the spuds were and is concerned the apple will contract the scab from the soil.
Is he right to be concerned?

    I don't think he has any reason to worry Pete.  The two are caused by completely different fungi (also a bacteria for one type of potato scab) and nearly all pathogenic fungi are specific to one particular species or plant family.  Potatoes and apples are not even closely related. :)

    Cheers Bob - he was considering planting the tree in a plastic dustbin with bottom removed and sinking that in the soil and fill with JI...
    I didn't think that was the best option and said I'd ask here on his behalf.
