Tree problem

Hi,
We have a large blossom tree in our back garden alongside a much smaller tree of the same species. In spring, the trees blossomed. But during the summer months, we have noticed an ever increasing patch of brown leaves which are very dry in the large tree, these leaves are brittle. In the smaller tree, there are no leaves at all. It does grow a new batch leaves from a end of a branch but these turn brown and dry out. Neither tree looks to be dead but both are clearly under some kind of distress. I can't imagine it is a water issue due to the weather. Once the leaves drop, we plan on pruning it right back and in the meantime I have been treating the small one with standard bug spray but doesn't seem have improved things much. Is it some kind of blight or other disease? Any advice appreciated.
. Thanks, Rob --

I know this sounds grumpy, which is very rude for your first post, so apologies for that.  But it’s a subject I get heated about!   If you haven’t seen any problem bugs why are you spraying chemical all over the place and killing potentially helpful insects?

Have a look along the branches and trunk for signs of canker. That’s a common cause of die back in fruit trees.  You’ll see sticky stuff exuding from the branch.

its a cherry, you can't prune in the winter as they can get either canker or silver leaf, you prune between end of April and end of July usually,
the 'growing leaves the turning brown and crispy' makes me think it has silver leaf (a fungal infection) for which there is no cure.
unfortunately the smaller tree may have it and therefore its a remove and replace job.
the larger tree might also have the disease if its in close proximity and been pruned at the wrong time of year
and I second the 'why are you using bug spray when it might not be bugs??' sentiment of Helix
