Overwintering onions

I showed some overwintering onions (shenshyu) and they are doing well, they have been outside in a pot since I sowed them in August.

Do I need to pot them into individual pots?

I don’t have greenhouse or cold frame, can I bring them indoors over the autumn/winter period and plant out in spring? I don’t have space to plant them outside yet.

  • i'd separate them into individual modules of a module tray, keep them outside and then plant in position in early October.

must admit i've never grown seedling onions overwinter, only ever onion sets.
  • Thank you, that's what I thought, but I read somewhere they don't like multiple transplanting.

They should be in the ground by end of September/early October as treehugger says, to make the most of the shorter daylight hours and give the bulbs time to swell and be ready for harvest at the end of May. If you can get them into the ground by then, you could probably hang on to them as they are. It’s possible they may not like been disturbed twice and/or be a bit stunted if you have them in modules/individual pots until the spring. But nothing ventured...
