Pond in the shade

I've set to digging a pond today πŸ˜„. Tonight Istarted reading up a bit more and found out it's not a good idea in the shade ( mine, of course is in the shade πŸ˜”). Any advice please? Will it just affect the planting or will I miss out on the wildlife too?

  • Could you supply us with some pictures of the pond and general area of the new pond @MrsGarden?Β  What is causing the shade, a tree, a building or perhaps fencing or walls - all these factors will make our advice more relevant to your particular pond.Β

Mine is in shade most of the day and it's full of beasts.

You'll still get wildlife using it, as @nickten says, but it can mean issues with foliage dropping into it if you have deciduous trees/shrubs etc causing the shade.Β
You just need a bit of vigilance with it, but otherwise, it doesn't mean you can't have one in a shadier spot. In a previous garden, I had one near the front window of the house, which meant the girls could look out in winter and see what, if anything, was going on. Because of the house walls, and northerly aspect,Β  it only had some afternoon sun, even in summer, and it was only for a few hours. We had loads of frogs and beetles etc, as well as the birds using itΒ  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

That's really good to know nickten.Β
Thanks Fairygirl, sounds so idyllic for the girls.

Didn't get any sun while I was at home but here are some pics anyway. There's an apple tree above and to the left which the sun is behind most of the day. There's a conifer, immediately to the right of the pond,is it old but I'm hoping it can be trimmed back. There's a phygelius to the bottom right.
I think it's probably dappled shade now I've thought about it more.
    Hmmm pics aren't attaching...
