Help with small garden design.

Hi
I would really like some help with a small garden design. This area was grassy before with some paving slabs.
I have taken it all up and I am in the process of preparing the soil but I have no idea where to go from there.

As you can see from the picture there is a small border where I’ve put in some random plants to add colour as when we first moved in it looked so dull. I don’t know if these will stay I’ve got a verbena, dahlia and some others that I can’t recall the names of they are doing very well in the soil especially the dahlia :)

Im keep the other slabs as I want to put a small bistro set on there.

Any thoughts and ideas much appreciated!

The choice of what you do depends on many things:-

aspect - which way it faces and how much sun it gets
soil - acid, alkaline, neurtal, well-drained, moistur eretentive, sandy, clay, loam
use - what to do you want?  Colour, perfume, foliage, low maintenance, year round interest, fruit, veg, herbs......
time - how much time do you have to spend on upkeep and do you want an instant garden?
budget - plants and possible structures if you want privacy or supports for climbers as it makes sense to use your vertical space too

As it's a small space, you need to keep it simple and use plants that are bold in form and/or colour so they make a statement.   Avoid small and bitty.

A lot depends on which part of the country you are in. Constant rain or drought?
Either way you could have a gravel garden with a few creeping plants amongst the stones and a border of colourful plants or grasses where your dahlias currently reside. It's a low maintenance option and allows you to keep it simple.

  • Maybe some height in the center, a bird bath or a small tree such as an acer, then lower ground covering plants around the edge. It also lends itself to becoming a pretty herb garden where the individual herbs could be separated with gravel or stones. Whatever you decide i am sure you will enjoy doing it.
