It's a viticella, but hard to say which exact one. Great colour.

Lots of clematis experts on here , but I'd like to have a guess at Etoile Violette. Fantastic picture, with those raindrops on it, and I like the colour of your trellis with it too- looks fab!

I think it's too red to be E.V.  Nearer Rouge Cardinal, but to be honest, there's so many.
Perhaps if @Richard Hodson is looking in, he can offer good suggestions.

No, Etoile Violette is very purple and usually has 5 tepals - http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clemdetail.cfm?dbkey=26

    Maybe Mme Julia Correvon

I wondered about Julia C. too @Obelixx, but I haven't grown it for a long time and couldn't remember if it was a larger flowering type.

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions. This was my Julia correvon in July, which seems more red'ish?

@Ericaheather - is there any specific reason you need to know which variety it is? Care, pruning etc?
If it's growing well for you and is healthy [it certainly looks happy]  does it matter, or is it just that you're curious to know?  :)

  • All of that @Fairygirl. I thought it was dead. I had cut it right down as it looked diseased and scraggly,  to be honest I thought I'd got it all out. Never dreamt it would come back.

Clematis are good at playing Lazarus!  I've had them do it after 2 or 3 years of playing dead, by which time the label has long gone.
