Rambling Rector problem

Help please!
Does anyone know if it's possible to keep a Rambling Rector to a modest size & still get flowers?
Up till this year we had a magnificent specimen growing up through some small trees.   Sadly, we had subsidence, so all these plants were cut down & killed off.  I was gutted, as you can imagine.
However, the Rector has now re-sprouted from a root in the middle of this bare patch.   This is very pleasing, but in view of its vigour, I don't quite know what to do.  I'm training a stem towards an apple tree about 8' away, but that still leaves the main plant.
Any advice much appreciated, thank you.

Bend any new stems over as horizontally as possible and keep them there with a framework of trellis or tensioned wires between posts from which, if necessary, it can leap off up a tree or a wall.   The horizontal training will encourage flowering shoots all along the stems and not just high up on top so you can then try and keep it smaller by trimming it to its new limits and regular removal of old stems to keep new ones coming.

Good luck.  In my experience these things like to get to 8 to 10m.......

  • Merci Obelixx.
    I'll give that a try.
The rose was originally at least 8m high & about 4 metres across.  It looked glorious in bloom though!
    Wish me luck.

...without a photo I cannot tell,  but I'd want to be sure it was the rose that has regrown and not the rootstock... assuming it was grafted and not grown from a cutting...
    ...only you know that...

  • Good point Marlorena!   I really have no idea.  Is this the same as suckers?    The growth looks just like the rose I was growing, but is very small so it's difficult to say.
Thanks for your response, I'll keep a good eye on things.

..that's ok.. best of luck with it... it sounds like your original rose then but if you want to post a photo sometime we can have a look at it... you don't want to be nurturing a sucker...

First make sure the photo size is not too big or it won't load.   Then click on the little rectangle with the mountain and sun in the row of icons above the reply box.   That will ask you to choose a photo to upload.
