Cosmos seeds

Do collected Cosmos seeds grow true to the parent plant?  I would like to grow similar plants to those I bought as plugs this year, what chance have I of them being identical? I don't have a picture or name of the variety to hand.

    Doesn't  always work GD. Can you remember the name of the ones you bought?

    They are very unlikely to be the same as the parent plants but that is the beauty of saving seed from your own garden.
    If you want something similar then the best bet is to scour the seed catalogues for the nearest match.

    I will check out the name next time I go down into the garden - perhaps later today @Lyn, although I am very tempted with the cupcake cosmos for next year, so perhaps a look in the GC will tempt me instead.

    Nice cosmos , seeds germinate very quickly so if you do sow them, don’t do it early, mid April is fine.

    Thanks @Lyn - I have made that mistake before - having to consign the leggy cosmos seedlings to the compost heap because I sowed them too early.  The Impatient Gardener comes to mind!

    I said mid April because of where you live, much warmer than here, but even end of April is good.
    so many people think they’re going to get an early start and sow in February in a propagator, as the packet says most times, then the plants are no good.

    Im in same position as GD. I have a gorgeous deep pink cupcake with inner frill and I can not find anyone who sells it singular. Mine came from a mixed cupcake mix.
    i am saving the seed and really hope it comes true

    No name tag on my Cosmos - and perhaps I will begin afresh with new seeds - I really liked some I saw on here - red, pink and white from the same seed packet similar to these I had grown from seed a few years ago, I think they were called Sonata mix.

    I’m fine thank you @Beaus Mum. Got lots of Astrantias now, thanks to you, they’ve been lovely.
