Planting young Eryngium

I've just planted two types of Eryngium, Eryngium- Giganteum Miss Willimot's Ghost,  and - Bourgatii. Both were young, tiny plants and presumably cuttings or seedlings. Should I have over-wintered them and planted them out in spring or is it ok (if not ideal) to plant them now? Will they suvive a cold winter?

The slugs might get them ... Id pot them up and grow them on in a cold frame or similar and plant them out when they’re a decent size.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

Thanks for that. Is general purpose compost ok for potting them up, or should it be a 50% gravel mix to help drainage? Sorry for the basic question
