  • Looking at the final photo, I wonder if the original fence treatment was oil based, so that nothing will stick to it now?  It certainly looks as if your dark brown hasn't soaked in where the white areas are...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I think the implication is that the whole fene was solid black a few months ago
  • Exterior wood shouldn't be painted. Stain or oil only. Paint is always going to look worse after a short to medium time.

The problem is that oils and stains are usually very limited in colour.  :/

Did you paint the snail as well @Burtsnest?  ;)

    B*ggers aren't they @Burtsnest?  :D
In addition to @glasgowdan's post, if it's black you want, there are certainly black stains, so maybe that's worth looking at.
The stains tend to be much more expensive, but it will depend on your budget. Now that my fences etc are getting covered by planting, it's something I'm considering. It would have cost more than the fencing if I'd used stain when I built the boundary etc here.

  • Yep it's a tough call isn't it @Fairygirl. I have a lot of fencing and it took forever to do last year but it looks awful already.  I'm going to have to have a think. The thought of having to repaint every year fills me with dread 😫

I don't mind painting - I find it quite therapeutic.
    I know, I know ...I'm weird  :D

I'm now retired, so have more time, but it's also the question of getting it done when weather suits too. I don't spend as much time in the garden as others either, so I like it in good order early in the year, so that I can do other things.

  • I'm quite lucky too, I have the time. It it sounds like you have a happy balance. We moved here last year.  I brought many plants with me (mostly in pots) I really can't decide what to do with this garden so probably won't get much planting done anyway this year. Just lots of fence painting 😂
