    Well, my view is that digging in huge quantities of bulk organic material is more important to give you a workable, freer draining base than lesser quantities of expensive, bagged material. Its amazing the sheer quantity of organic material you need to make a difference - it just seems to get swallowed up.

    I bought in bulk (builders bags) composted manure, compost and grit to dig into heavy clay soil and was pleased with the quality, so ‘bulk’ does not always equate with ‘poor’. 

    You can always add blood fish and bone, chicken manure pellets, liquid feed, posher compost etc. later to further enrich the soil when planting.
