What is this tree?

Hello everyone.
I am in Telford for a few days visiting friends and I wondered if anyone would know what this tree is called. It is in our friends garden and they would love to know what it is. It doesn't look particularly healthy and looks quite spindly. Hope someone can help. Thank you

This is a real shot in the dark, but going by the shape of the leaves it could be some type of elm ?
It's certainly seen better days, and looks quite old.
Are your friends concerned about it, or are they just curious?

Thank you for your replies. I will have a job getting any closer as it's about 18 feet tall. I had to take the photo with a telephoto lens to get it as close as I could.
They say it does have pink blossom in the spring, no photo of that I am afraid.
Might send husband up there on a ladder tomorrow to get closer, he'll enjoy that.:)  It is on a bit of ground that our friends have found out that they own. They haven't lived here long just 9 months. So, deciding whether to leave, cut back or cut down.

I think it’s an elderly prunus of some sort ...
