I've used the same solution as Hostafan1.  Low tech, and works every time.  Mine are on UPVC doors and hold really well.

Patio doors are sliding doors; hinged opening double doors are French doors, which is what I think you have.  If they are new PVCu doors, there is likely to be a mechanism at the top that holds them in place.  You have to stand on a step ladder to see it, but once found, a turn of a screwdriver will hold them in place.  Once set, you will find that the doors will be more firmly held open.  If not, contact the manufacturer for advice.
I hope this is the case - i will be checking this shorly :-) , Thank you

Frankly I can't really see why it's not adopted more commonly.

Just don't try and close them when latched as I did! Can have a rather negative effect on any one of the door / latch / wall  :#

I blame a bit of ‘give’ in the fitting arrangement which meant there was a bit of inertia momentum before the latch kicked in to action. Oh and maybe a little metal fatigue. Oh, and my bull in a china shop approach!

Looking on the bright side, it was the hook which failed rather than ripping the fitting off the door.
