Will Calluna vulgaris air layer?

I've a very old and wiry autumn flowering Calluna vulgaris. var "Peter Sparkes" which I wanted to take a couple of clones from.
It's too brittle to layer in the soil. The other specimen has lost all but one of its scaffold stems at attempts to layer in the soil.
Would air layering work?

    The best way to propagate calluna is to bury the plant deeper which will encourage the tips to root ... it’s a technique called ‘Dropping’ and is described here

    It works for other plants too - like Dianthus. Very effective  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
