Roses

Could anybody tell me whether these are “suckers”. I seem to remember reading somewhere a long time ago that true rose leaves only have 5 leaves but these have 7. These are not growing from the base of the root but from branches. They are also on well established roses.

    Suckers grow from the rootstock so, assuming you still have the original grafted rose growing above ground and these are shoots from that, then they are just new shoots.   Quite a few of my roses produce this lovely coppery colour in their new shoots.

    Roses with various shrub rambler and species roses in their ancestry frequently have more than five leaflets. 😊

    In addition to points made above, I have read that the coppery shoots are never from rootstock; rootstock shoots would be green.
