Crocosmia

When is the best time to plant Crocosmia Emily Mackenzie and will they flower next year. I'm wanting one that doesn't flop (someone suggested Emily M)as I have dug out quite a lot of the common montbretia cos although I love the flowers I hated the way the foliage just flops over. Or if anyone knows of anything similar which flowers around now and is orange. Thanks..

    You can buy pots in full leaf to plant now, or wait until later and order corms to plant in the autumn, which will flower next year.

    I've got one called 'Fugue' that is a lovely fresh orange, it's been in flower here for a couple of weeks. It's much taller than Emily Mac - about 1m tall in my garden, but it's very sturdy and upright, even in my windy plot. So if you've room for a bigger one, it might suit. It doesn't seed about, it's just clumping up.

    My Emily Mackenzie is just coming into flower, it quite a short compact variety. Unusual colouring too.

    I find Crocosmia Emily Mackenzie to be less invasive than some of the other Crocosmia.

    I love Emily Mackensie for it’s glowing colour and shorter habit, but it still leans a bit. Position is important, I think. Mine is planted on an open, sunny, north-west corner of a bed, but it wants to head south. A couple of half-hoop plant stakes on the south side stops it flopping over nearby plants - the flowers and foliage hide the hoops.
