Rose problem

This is not the same rose as in the second and third pics, this was bought from a garden centre in a large pot; I would have thought the volume of soil in a 3'x18"x10" deep was sufficient, if the roots can't go down then surely they will spread outwards.
Oh, sorry, I misunderstood, I thought you had brought it with you.

Roses don’t grow well in short pots, they have a deep root run so a tall pot is essential, the extra width will not compensate. They can survive a season or even two in a short pot and flower, but even small patio roses need more than 10” if they are to thrive long term. There is no reason why you can’t grow roses, so long as you plant in large, deep pots and you choose roses suitable for shade. I don’t know if FP is one of them...

@DorsetMike   I note you've had the rose in this trough for 4 years.. how has it performed the other 3 ?.. has the deterioration only set in this season?..
Trough planters are ok for roses and I have one similar to yours but is 15'' deep.. I can't imagine growing a rose like this in anything shorter...

… you had a nice rose before, well trained as per hybrid perpetual growth habits but you can't expect the same result from this pot... these HP's with Bourbon ancestry... it's likely a sport from old Commandant Beaurepaire, a 19th C Bourbon class rose... need all the sun they can get, and are deserving of the very best positions - it's capable of climbing too and is quite spectacular when grown that way ...  it sounds as though you had a reasonable first flush, but I think you will have to lower your expectations regarding later flushes for this rose, as you have it now... the sun gets lower in the sky, days shortening.. I doubt you'll get the fullest flush after July..

...to be honest, a  3 foot long 10 inch deep pot I would probably only use for bedding plants...

..consider a deeper pot or trough... here is mine.. I have 'Lichfield Angel' in it currently.. west facing.. sun only from mid afternoon... I also had 'Benjamin Britten' in it previously, got 4 full flushes of blooms... so troughs are ok with adequate depth..

    'Lichfield Angel'...

    ..just starting another flush...

...sorry about your eaten bloom... we all get those but no fun when it's the only one you've got...

Here are my photos of 'Ferdinand Pichard'... as you can see it's not always necessary to peg it down or let it climb... although I do prefer it as a climber..

My shallowest rose pots are 18" deep. I have occasionally had the problem of small roses with flat tops but it's usually after I have been away and a friend or house sitter has watered them. So I think it may also have something to do with not enough water when the buds are forming.
