What animal keeps digging a hole in my garden?

Based in Surrey, UK. The hole is about 8” long by 5” wide. It’s definitely an animal, I keep covering it and it makes a new hole everytime.

Could be foxes or badgers.  Logs on soil are the perfect habitat for many types of beetle larvae which are a favourite food of the afromentioned wildlife.

Thank you! I have seen foxes around but no badgers, I’m thinking it must be a fox.

Squirrels? It doesn't look very big for a large mammal. They bury nuts, for later.

I haven’t seen foxes or squirrels going near there, the hole is close to my house. I’m changing my guess to a badger or a hedgehog. Is it possible that they only come out only very late at night so that I have never seen them? I have seen hedgehogs about 15 years ago, could it be a hedgehog?

Hedgehog is possible but not famous for digging holes that size.  They are all nocturnal animals so you are unlikely to see them at work unless you have a trailcam.  However, a fox remains my favourite potential culprit.

Thank you, I’ll put a camera and try to find out what animal it is.
