it is popping up everywhere, through the lawn, in the paving, around the pond. Thought it may be a sapling but can’t work out which one!

suckers rather than sapling I think. Is there something that's been cut down?

A lot of trees have been cut down as it was very over grown but these suckers are spread over an area of around 30x30 meters! Any idea how to eradicate?
