Can you show a photo of the leaves? Usually damaged leaves one year will be fine next year. Digging the tree out is somewhat drastic.
  • A picture had been uploaded from my iPad the leaves are yellow and slightly curly just like you would expect to find them in autumn hope this is of help

There is no picture showing. Are the roots dry?  How old is the tree? If it has insufficient water, it may shed leaves early.
You can use the Photo icon in the toolbar to upload a picture (oblong with sun and mountains icon)
  • Here is the picture ,roots are wet , were in Carlisle, been quite wet recently

Looks like plum rust, a fungal infection.  When the leaves drop, make sure you rake them all up and burn or send away in council bin. Do not compost.  You can spray with a fungicide early on in the season, but it is probably too late  for this year.
  • Thanks very much for your help don't really want to take the tree out I will give it a go fingers crossed
