Apple tree problems

Hi everyone
I have 3 apple trees that have all been successful to varying degrees. However one now has some issues and I'm not sure how to deal with it and would like some advice please.
It's an established tree and has been relatively ok up to now. I noticed that the bark is peeling and some branches including, part of the main trunk, look dead. I have attached some photos.
I have looked up books & Google but can only see canker. Is this what's wrong? I wasn't sure it looked the same.
Any advice on how to help the tree would be appreciated.
