gifted a small Irish oak tree query on how to plant

hello everyone,

I was gifted a small Irish oak tree as a present for our newborn son.
ive had conflicting advice on potting and watering.
the advice that came with the tree is to plant in a large pot and allow compost to Dry out before watering as the roots don't like to be too wet however when we went to the garden centre the advice was to plant in a smaller pot and to keep well watered, she said its only when its in the ground that you don't want to water it to much. obviously the tree means alot to us and we want to make sure we are doing the right thing.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Show some pics of current pot and plant, I think easier to give best advice then.

Also where will you keep the pot. ...ins south facing garden or a shady spot and where in the country are you roughy, Scotland and south coast you might get different advice.

Is there a reason you do not want to plant it in the ground? It will be a lot easier to look after and less likely to die.
