Deutiza with small white flowers

I have had this plant for a few years.  Last year I cut it right down to within 12 - 18ins, to the main branches, because it had grown out of shape.  This year it did have a few flowers, but now it is has grown really tall(6 ft) and leggy, plenty of branches, but they need to be stronger.  What should I do.  Please help.

    leave it to flower next year, then cut out the branches which have flowered and leave newer stems for flowers the following year
