hi,, we have a established holly tree about 8 feet high. the problem is each year it only produces about six berries, any ideas to improve berry production
I had a variegated holly which I kept to about 10 foot high. I don't know if different varieties act differently but mine was the only holly in a 20 garden radius, yes I could see that far, and mine had lots of berries but not for many years. Maybe yours isn't old enough yet? Mine was 20 years old before it really was heavy with berries. I was sad to have to leave it. I did take cuttings, but only two have survived one of which is now 12 inches tall, after four years!
The idea of holly berries is nice, but in my experience,you're unlikely to see them for long. The pigeons etc will eat them. My holly bush is covered with berries -for now😕
May I recommend Ilex aquifolium Bacciflava...a female holly. It is rather special ...the berries are golden. The birds leave them alone...maybe thinking they are not yet ripe. Berries produced even on young plants.
Needs a male common holly to pollinate the flowers in the neighbourhood.
