Clematis Niobe Flowering well but lower leavings browning and crinkly

My clematis planted on a east facing wall grows and flowers very well every year, but every year after it begins flowering, the leaves start browning. I tried to remove these leaves occasionally thinking it was a fungal issue but it repeats every year. What is the reason and what can be done to stop this? thanks

    Thirst.  Give it a good, deep drink once a week so it sinks down to the deeper roots.  The wall not only casts a rain shadow but also soaks up a lot of ground water itself and facing east is not, I imagine, the prevailing direction for wind and rain so try watering regularly and see if that helps.
